Maybe the fact that Warner Bros. was paying out the nose for five years trying to get other people to come up with a sequel to the original 'GREMLINS' 80's smash Christmas hit , they settled back with Dante. No one cracked it, so they went to the original's director and said if you make this sequel (director Joe Dante never wanted to see a Gremlin again after the first movie) that they would give him a big budget and total creative control.
Joe Dante is a cinematic anarchist on a big mainstream scale, and he decided to make an anti-sequel, anti-original movie, Mad Magazine, Mad-Libs, Looney Tunes inspired(obviously) sequel to end all sequels and GREMLINS forever.
Of course they are in the process of remaking the first movie, so I guess he failed. Sort of. Both of Dante's GREMLINS are fun New York set holiday 'cheer' movies and alternatives to the 'Star Wars' long lined hype. One thing that both of these films have in common (STAR WARS and GREMLINS) are merchandising brilliance and capitalism at its most grossest element.
That said, I'm thinking GREMLINS wins the cake, and eats, the cake. bye.
