Congratulations to Sophia Copolla ! Huge win marking you as the second woman to ever win the prize- Best Film Director 2017 at Cannes Film Festival. Well deserved and took way too long. You rock. And like I always have said, your films are far more original than your dad's work (aesthetically).
so, so cool. bye.

Ya gotta have faith.

Kinda experienced the unexpected, as the new Ridley Scott 'Alien: Covenant' film was far better than I thought it would be. It was pretty great. Scott remained focused on the 'Prometheus' existential backstory of the mystery of creation and faith, and even inserted an Abel and Cain theme between two cyborgs - a power struggle between soulless beings made by man's power hungry mind and God complex. The film was pretty well cast and really didn't need the dumb creatures running around eating folks at all (they were just placed into this script to increase ticket sales, I'm convinced), all the movie needed was the human horror story of how bad things get when our faith is lost and left to blindly believing in objects that lack souls. Thumbs Up to M. Fassbinder, D. McBride, and R. Scott, you guys worked so well as a team and kicked ass in performances and film direction.

 bye.

p.s. This is an excellent soundtrack by composer Jed Kurzel, with very tasteful (i.e. subtle) uses of synths and moods... very impressive.

and for the record, Soundgarden before 'Badmotorfinger' is what really matters (and then Chris's pipes thereafter). Soundgarden before record company rep business sharks came in- and smelled the blood $$$. Although, 'Slaves and Bulldozers' is pretty damn classic... just sayin'.

for Chris

"Say Hello 2 Heaven"

Please, mother of mercy
Take me from this place
and the long winded curses
I keep here in my head
Words never listen
and teachers, oh, they never learn
but I'm warm from the candle
though I feel too cold to burn
He came from an island
and he died from the street
and he hurt so bad like a soul breaking
but he never said nothing to me

So say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven...
So say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven...

New, like a baby
Lost, like a prayer
The sky was your playground
but the cold ground was your bed
I said poor stargazer
She's got no tears in her eyes
but smooth like a whisper
She knows that love heals all wounds with time
Now it seems like too much love is never enough
Yeah, you better seek out another road
'cause this one has ended abrupt

So say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven...
So say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven...
I never wanted to write these words down for you
with the pages of phrases of all the things we'll never do
So I blow out the candle
and I put you to bed
Since you can't say to me now
how the dogs broke your bone
there's just one thing left to be said

So say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven...
So say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven...

RIP, Chris.

Kurt, Andrew, Layne and now Chris. All of my Subpop heroes have departed. No words. This came out of left field. Chris was the most positive guy in the 90s music scene. Prayers to his family. Life is crazy. We don't know if we will have tomorrow, all we know is that we have today. The fragility that IS life.

I really hope Mr. T doesn't fire Spicey next week. Seems that Spicey is next on the chopping block. Darn it.  Daily Spicey press briefings are better than any sitcom out there today (and in years). This really sucks. They should hire Melissa McCarthy if he gets canned this week. Fingers are crossed. bye.

Congrats Steve, great review and great photography work (as always). A small quote for you inspired by Scorcese's Travis Bickle aka Taxi Driver ... "Someday a real gentrification will come and wash all this urban blight off the streets." bye.

Cinema is gone,” Scorsese says. “The cinema I grew up with and that I’m making, it’s gone. “The theatre will always be there for that communal experience, there’s no doubt. But what kind of experience is it going to be?” he continues. “Is it always going to be a theme-park movie? The big screen for us in the ’50s, you go from Westerns to Lawrence of Arabia to the special experience of 2001 in 1968. The experience of seeing Vertigo and The Searchers in VistaVision.”
Scorsese points to the proliferation of images and the over-reliance on superficial techniques as trends that have diminished the power of cinema to younger audiences. “It should matter to your life,” he says. “Unfortunately the latest generations don’t know that it mattered so much.”
The future of movies, he believes, is in the freedom that technology has yielded for anyone to make a movie.

Excellent interview with Penelope Spheeris

Watching' 'The Decline of Western Civilization' with Dave Grohl doin' its film commentary and it's really great. Such a great doc film by Penelope Spheeris in all of its glorious raw editing and non-glamorous lightbulb (literally) lighting approach. I still have very mixed feelings about Grohl and the sell-out choices that he's made since Kurt died, but he did a really good job on talking throughout this movie. I imagine he must have felt like he was on a well $$$ paid memory-lane trip to his teenager years- lucky him. I wonder if he misses his childhood neighborhood lawnmower jobs and the difference in that pay rate, probably not. bye.
