Nancy Holt (1938–2014)
02.10.14
Artist Nancy Holt has passed away. Though she also worked in diverse media including film, photography, and writing, Holt was perhaps most famous for her large-scale environmental works, which treated the sun, earth, and stars as markers of perception. Among her well-known pieces wereSun Tunnels—an installation of weighty concrete tunnels aligned in response to the sunrise and sunset of summer and winter solstice—and Dark Star Park—which comprised multiple spheres, pools, steel poles, and tunnels occupying a park in Rosslyn, Virginia. A major figure in the land art movement who collaborated with everyone from astrophysicists and surveyors to her late husband, Robert Smithson, Holt was the recipient of five NEA grants and a Guggenheim fellowship. She was recognized with a lifetime achievement award by the International Sculpture Center in 2013.
