Japanese documentary filmmaker Hara Kazuo's film was introduced & screened on 16mm at ASIA SOCIETY in NYC and I was there for sure (no popcorn available, but opted for a can of $1 diet coke). Pushing the genre and subjects into uncharted territories, these films address issues fundamental to documentary filmmaking: privacy, authority, authenticity, and responsibility. They also offer penetrating contemplations on Japanese society and individual lives. and of course Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, all of these filmmakers try desperately to try to rip my style off. Whateva. stop hating ye biters. go get a soda. 16mm filmstock rules. and so does the woman who curated the show. awesome film. every film pop and film scratch mattered.
