NYFF Q & A with Poitras+Goldin - 2022 documentary

Poitras co-directed, produced, and shot her documentary, Flag Wars (2003), about gentrification in Columbus, Ohio. It received a Peabody Award, Best Documentary at both the 2003 South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival and the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, and the Filmmaker Award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. The film launched the 2003 season of the PBS TV series POV. It was nominated for a 2004 Independent Spirit Award and a 2004 Emmy Award. Poitras's other early films include O' Say Can You See... (2003) and Exact Fantasy (1995). Her film My Country, My Country (2006), about life for Iraqis under U.S. occupation, was nominated for an Academy Award. The Oath (2010), concerns two Yemeni men caught up in America's War on Terror, won the Excellence in Cinematography Award for U.S. Documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.  The two films form parts of a trilogy. The last third Citizenfour (2014) details how the War on Terror increasingly focuses on Americans through surveillance, covert activities, and attacks on whistleblowers. Poitras at PopTech 2010 in Camden, Maine On August 22, 2012, in a forum of short documentaries produced by independent filmmakers, The New York Times published an "Op-doc" produced by Poitras entitled The Program. It was preliminary work that was to be included in a documentary planned for release as the final part of the trilogy. The documentary was based on interviews with William Binney, a 32-year veteran of the National Security Agency, who became a whistleblower and described the details of the Stellar Wind project that he helped to design. He stated that the program he worked on had been designed for foreign espionage, but was converted in 2001 to spying on citizens in the United States, prompting concerns by him and others that the actions were illegal and unconstitutional and that led to their disclosures. The Program implied that a facility being built at Bluffdale, Utah is part of domestic surveillance, intended for storage of massive amounts of data collected from a broad range of communications that could be mined readily for intelligence without warrants. Poitras reported that on October 29, 2012 the United States Supreme Court would hear arguments regarding the constitutionality of the amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that were used to authorize the creation of such facilities and justify such actions. bye.

 

   

CCP (Chinese Communist Party) Peaceful Protest in NYC

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), officially the Communist Party of China (CPC),is the founding and sole ruling party of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Under the leadership of Mao Zedong, the CCP emerged victorious in the Chinese Civil War against the Kuomintang, and, in 1949, Mao proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Since then, the CCP has governed China with eight smaller parties within its United Front and has sole control over the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Each successive leader of the CCP has added their own theories to the party's constitution, which outlines the ideological beliefs of the party, collectively referred to as socialism with Chinese characteristics. As of 2022, the CCP has more than 96 million members, making it the second largest political party by party membership in the world after India's Bharatiya Janata Party. The Chinese public generally refers to the CCP as simply "the Party".

Cancer Kills.

Kirstie was a doppelgänger to my favorite & closest cousin Lisa Roscoe, and therefore I always felt a strong connection to her. In addition, Kirstie's sharp sarcastic humor just always connected with me- she was so hilarious and cunning. My favorite performance of her's was in the film, RUNAWAY starring Tom Selleck, Gene Simmons and Kirstie.

Why No Notoriety?  

The goal of No Notoriety is to reduce the amount of rampage mass killings that have escalated in both occurrence and severity over the last 15 years. Research and ensuing data support the fact that infamy and notoriety is a motivational factor for individuals to commit rampage mass murder to elevate themselves to a level that they cannot achieve in a normal fashion through their everyday lives. We now know that one killer inspires another. We must do everything we can to prevent future atrocities that could result from extensive media coverage of individuals who attempt or commit these rampages. No Notoriety is of the belief that the only message from the media to potential killers should be, “you will not receive fame in this way any more.” 

Media driven infamy can be removed with little or no negative impact to society. This only requires the media to place the matter of public safety as a priority. No Notoriety calls on the media to eliminate the gratuitous use of the name and likeness of rampage mass killers, and shift the focus to the victims, heroes and survivors. 

Notoriety serves as not only a reward for these murderers, but also as a “call to action” for other like-minded individuals who seek to gain a similar amount of publicity, motivating them to create and carry out copycat acts.

 

John Cazale

The incredible and curious career of John Cazale (1935-1978) …

“John Cazale only acted in five films throughout the 1970s before his tragic death at the age of 42 from lung cancer. However, the actor’s small filmography is far from modest, with every feature film he starred in nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. These films include iconic pictures such as The Godfather, The Godfather Part II , The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter – with both of The Godfather movies and The Deer Hunter receiving the respective award.”

Incredible 70's documentary by Edward Hunt

    

I just finished watching the best documentary I have seen yet regarding unidentified flying objects, now called unidentified aerial phenomena. This film is titled UFO'S ARE REAL and is out-of-print (I located a VHS copy of the film on EBAY) and was released in 1979. The documentary has declassified documents from militry generals, FBI directors, past presidents and international testimonials supported by a slew of physical evidence and testing. Can't recommend this documentary enough for anyone interested in the topic of our existing galaxies out there so very far away. Bye.

                               

                               

                              

The documentary inspired me to venture up to the White Mountains of New Hampshire and pay my respects to married couple Betty and Barney Hill, who were the first case about an abduction with enough merit & legitamacy that a government landmark was placed to comemmorate their incredible personal experience in 1961. Bye Again.

Nicko McBrain is one of my favorite drummers around, and primarily because of my admiration for his relentless use of the tom toms and floor toms within the rhythmic architecture of the songs his band Iron Maiden creates. At 70 years of age the guy is at the top of his game. Total inspiration!
