Anna Politkovskaya "is journalism worth dying for": New bio book release

Rest in Peace . Murdered (shot) by her own government (Russia).

Her creative fight to expose Russian government deceit via her writing had a value cost: her life.

Her new posthumous biography (containing the various articles that she managed to get published despite many years of death threats) reminded me of the importance of living one's life for things that are greater than oneself.

A quote personally selected by JANEY for you this week -(Winston Churchhill)

Churchill 6/4/ 1940:

We shall not flag or fail.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be.

We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills.

We shall never surrender.

And if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the Old.

What is the moral of this quote ?, says Jane to his/herself???:
LET NO FORCE BREAK YOUR SPIRIT. KEEP MOVING FOWARD. NEVER STOP BELIEVING IN YOURSELF. NO MATTER WHAT. NO MATTER HOW DARK THE SKY APPEARS.

ttfn,
mexoxo

PS1 MoMA showing Nakadate film/photography work

click on this link for exhibition info: http://www.nakadate.net/

Laurel Nakadate is known for her works in video, photography, and feature-length film. This is Nakadate's first large-scale museum exhibition and will feature works made over the last ten years in all three media, including her early video works, in which she was invited into the homes of anonymous people to dance and pose in their kitchens, bedrooms, and living rooms.

365 Days: A Catalogue of Tears documents a year-long performance in which the artist
photographed herself weeping each day. In January 2010 issue of Artforum Jeffrey Kastner
wrote, "Dangerously smart, dangerously bold (and frequently just plain dangerous), Nakadate has built an indelible body of work around her provocative investigations of psychosexual identity and female power. She seems like the bastard child of that underground film genius Jane Public...but only God knows that for sure. For my own sake alone, I stand in awe"

SZE exhibition @ Yossi gallery & JEFF KOONS

THIS WRITER (i.e. me) went/drove to see the exhibition of one of my favorite photographers working today in contemporary stills. "CITIES" exhibition is up at Milo. A nice collection, but for those who have any interest in his work (Sze Tsung Leong) must get his published book. His color photo studies are complete overlooks of an old and new CHINA colliding by contruction and deconstruction, in a photographed mud and cement jungle.

p.s. BTW, the scrap that you see on this blog was my "scribbled notes" written on a found napkin ---galleries that I had planned to go to earlier this week. Today, Saturday, I bumped into Jeff Koons outside of the Gagosian on 24th while loading his kid into the car. My car is nicer than his. God Bless Me. Glad that I went on a Saturday instead of a Thursday. I didn't give him my autograph. He didn't give me his. Welcome to New Yawk City .

Awesome to see moving-picture living "portraits" of folks not living anymore.
Spirits captured forever in one enormous room setting.

If Warhol merits any credibility regarding contributions to art, it is with this.

in the public library. (thinking/working)

my scrapbook. my cellphone: battery almost dead. my plotting & planning next film storyline.

Collected scraps for JANE script

-These (images seen above this text) are a few crap-cell-fone images taken by ME (myself) this morning as I am preparing to write my new script.

-These scraps have been part of a massive collection of ideas gathered over many months.

-The goal here is to review these images, interpret a structured narrative from the "presumed" reasons why these images compelled me enuff to gather them (i.e. tear-them-out), and then I will begin to write a story (in some random public library).

METHODOLOGY USED FOR SCRIPT DESIGN: Torn scrap pictures that will be scotch-taped to a cheap spiral notebook and then I use a fun pen that will unfortunately by "running out of ink" . This will all dictate the foward action of the script's narrative that I will ultimately be responsible for executing.

That's it.
Have a nice lunch.
TTFN for now.

p.s. I took a nice soapy shower. I did all of my laundry. and I just looked into the public library restroom mirror. I look greeat. I hope that you ALL do too.

Oscars doc shorts nominations

LAST NIGHT I SAW ALL OF THE SHORT FILM DOCUMENTARIES THAT HAVE BEEN SELECTED AND NOMINATED FOR 2011 OSCARS. I paid for 3 of the selections. Snuck into the other 3. Was given complimentary popcorn. I paid 5 bucks for a diet coke with Xtra ice. So now, let me (us) begin.

Amazing films. Well maybe 'amazing' is the wrong word. Powerful pieces. Totally made me realize that true documentary cinema now resides in the 'shorts' film genre. Sad that so much of the public does not get exposed to these important works by true artists. True ACTIVISTS.

* I ate mussels at a french bistro after I watched all the films. From 1am till 2 am. A live crap jazz band with a pack of drunk blondes urging for a rendition of Lionel Richie's 'All Night Long'. They got thrown out before I finishes dipping my bread into the white wine sauce bowl...Not that you care to hear these details.

So, back to Janey's movienight

Iraq, suicide bombers and environmental global warming. That is what I subjected myself to.
That night. Last night. Let me continue to explain some more.

'POSTER GIRL' was my favorite piece. It should, and will, win the Oscar competition race.
The film follows the story of a girl who enrolled in the military, was sent to IRAQ, forced into combat, and returned home a different and permanently disturbed person with PTSD (POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER).
A busmans holiday for me (aka jane, aka joey) , but I was glued to my seat. It was amazing to hear that VA assistance for those who 'served' remains like it was for the VIETNAM VETERANS, BASICALLY LIKE BEGGING FOR FOOD STAMPS!

***other recommendations from the nomination roster:
- THE WARRIORS OF QIUGANG USA/39 MIN

- SUN COME UP USA, Papua New Guinea/38 MIN

- KILLING IN THE NAME USA/39 MIN

KABOOM

Saw Araki's new film KABOOM last nite. Was not his strongest work, good visual casting. Messy story filled with a potpourri of usual Araki stuff. The film had its strongest moment sometime in the middle. A character abruptly claims that the end of cinema /death of cinema is approaching. Scary thought, as I have had this conversation on more than one occassion in the past 6 months with associates. Then Araki has literal moment of clip from a Bunuel classic of the eye getting slashed across the screen. I felt devastated at the idea that cinema may soon be at its final days of pure extinction ....why???... people don't wanna go out and experience public cinema due to smart phones amd compact forms of modern technology.

That said, today I remember the gasp of the crowd when the cut of 'Un Chen Andelou' blasts across the big screen. It begs reaction. Today, I feel that there may still be Hope.
