Lena Baker and Expanded Cinema - 'On Griffin Alley'

ON GRIFFIN ALLEY, is an 'Expanded Cinema' live performance work and interdisciplinary experiment, fusing stage theatre and expanded cinema techniques. The goal is not to have a “clean, finished product,” but rather, it is an exploration of the process of the work, which subsequently becomes the work. Through the use of found objects, artifacts, archival film footage, and sound design we hope to create a new language of performance. 'ON GRIFFIN ALLEY' Directed by: Joey Huertas Starring: Connie Winston Written by THE WATCH (collaboration between the two artists Joey and Connie) Live soundscape music performance: Joey Huertas ALL 'LIVE SOUNDSCAPE MUSIC' PERFORMED DERIVES FROM SAMPLED SOUNDS CAPTURED FROM LIVE POWER GENERATORS AND LIVE ELECTRICITY SOURCES. On Griffin Alley is a an anti Capital Punishment work and a re-imagining of the trial of Lena Baker, a 44-year old Black American female who was convicted of killing Ernest B. Knight, her 56-year old white male employer with whom she also was engaged in an illicit love affair in Jim Crow Cuthbert, Georgia. *** Baker is the first and only woman to ever be electrocuted in the State of Georgia. The year was 1944. Baker’s trial lasted for less than one full day, and her jury was comprised of twelve white males. The trial transcript is approximately ten pages long. This live performance was created by interpreting the transcript during self-imposed DIY residency and using found artifacts to design the stage set and "Old Sparky" electric chair.

Went to visit my film family at their new micro-cinema theatre, art gallery and home space in Brooklyn. So happy to see so much life - and rebirth- come from an organization that inspired so many film artists since the 1960's. So happy and proud of you guys! MFW lives on and is thriving once again !

Lake Champlain, Vermont & the hunt for a sea monster.

#CHAMP-SEAMONSTERHUNTEXPEDITION

The Indigenous people that have long lived and hunted near Lake Champlain, the Abenaki and the Iroquois, have their own legends about a large creature inhabiting the lake, which looked like a large, horned serpent or giant snake. The Abenaki term for this creature is Gitaskog. Early in the 18th century, Abenakis warned French explorers about disturbing the waters of the lake, so as not to disturb the serpent. Samuel de Champlain, whom the lake is named after, is often erroneously credited with being the first European to sight Champ, but readings of his accounts show that he saw something near the St. Lawrence River. Nevertheless, his account of his sighting is of interest to anyone with an interest in lake monsters!

Champlain described what he saw like this: ". . . [T]here is also a great abundance of many species of fish. Amongst others there is one called by the natives Chaousarou, which is of various lengths; but the largest of them, as these tribes have told me, are from eight to ten feet long. I have seen some five feet long, which were as big as my thigh, and had a head as large as my two fists, with a snout two feet and a half long, and a double row of very sharp, dangerous teeth. Its body has a good deal the shape of the pike; but it is protected by scales of a silvery gray colour and so strong that a dagger could not pierce them."

Historians think Champ is probably a garfish, a class that includes lake sturgeon, which still live in Lake Champlain today. Champlain's description of the creature sounds very much like a garfish, albeit much larger than usual.
